Abstract

Smart contracts have emerged as a foundational innovation in blockchain technology, enabling trustless, automated, and transparent digital transactions. Unlike traditional contracts that rely on intermediaries and legal enforcement, smart contracts execute predefined rules automatically through decentralized networks. This paper examines the concept, architecture, and operational mechanisms of smart contracts and analyzes their role in facilitating trustless digital transactions. It explores key applications across finance, supply chain management, healthcare, and governance while critically evaluating associated challenges such as security vulnerabilities, scalability constraints, and legal uncertainties. The study further assesses the future prospects of smart contracts in transforming digital ecosystems. The findings suggest that smart contracts significantly enhance efficiency, transparency, and trust in digital transactions, but their sustainable adoption depends on technological maturity, regulatory harmonization, and improved security standards.
